What Mac do I need to run SpeakUp?
SpeakUp requires a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, or later). It uses the Apple Silicon GPU for fast, on-device speech recognition. Intel Macs are not supported.
What macOS version is required?
SpeakUp requires macOS 14.6 (Sonoma) or later. To check your version, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then click About This Mac.
How much disk space does SpeakUp need?
The SpeakUp app itself is small (under 50 MB). The speech recognition model requires approximately 500 MB of additional disk space, downloaded during initial setup. Total: about 550 MB.
How much RAM does SpeakUp use?
SpeakUp uses approximately 900 MB of RAM during transcription in standard quality mode. In low memory mode, it uses about 400 MB. SpeakUp works well on any Mac with 8 GB or more of unified memory.
Does SpeakUp work on MacBook Air?
Yes. SpeakUp works great on any Apple Silicon MacBook Air (M1 or later). The M-series chips provide more than enough processing power for real-time speech recognition.
Does SpeakUp work on Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Pro?
Yes. SpeakUp runs on any Apple Silicon Mac, including Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro, as long as it has an M1 chip or later and runs macOS 14.6+.
Does SpeakUp work on iPad or iPhone?
Not yet. SpeakUp is currently a macOS-only app. An iOS version is planned for the future.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only for the initial model download (about 500 MB) and license activation. After setup, SpeakUp works completely offline. No internet is needed for dictation.
Does SpeakUp work with external microphones?
Yes. SpeakUp uses whatever microphone is selected as the system default in macOS Sound settings. This includes built-in microphones, USB microphones, Bluetooth headsets, and audio interfaces.
