How does push-to-talk work?
Push-to-talk is the default dictation mode. Hold down your chosen hotkey, speak naturally, then release. SpeakUp transcribes your speech and types the text into whatever app is currently focused. It works in any text field across macOS: email, documents, chat, code editors, browsers, and more.
What is hands-free mode?
Hands-free mode lets you dictate without holding a key. Press your hotkey once to start recording, speak as long as you want, then press it again to stop. This is useful for longer dictation sessions where holding a key would be uncomfortable.
You can switch between push-to-talk and hands-free mode in SpeakUp Settings.
Which languages does SpeakUp support?
SpeakUp currently supports English and German. You can enable one or both languages in Settings. When both are enabled, SpeakUp automatically detects which language you are speaking and transcribes accordingly. No need to switch manually.
How do I change my dictation language?
Open SpeakUp Settings (click the menu bar icon, then Settings) and go to the Language section. Toggle English or German on or off. Changes take effect immediately.
Does SpeakUp add punctuation automatically?
Yes. The AI model adds periods, commas, question marks, and other punctuation based on your natural speech patterns. You do not need to say “period” or “comma.” Just speak naturally and the punctuation appears.
Does SpeakUp capitalize correctly?
Yes. SpeakUp automatically capitalizes the first word of sentences, proper nouns, and other words that should be capitalized based on context. The AI model handles this without any manual input.
Where does the dictated text go?
The transcribed text is typed into whatever app and text field you have focused when you start dictating. SpeakUp works just like a keyboard. If your cursor is in a Google Doc, the text goes there. If your cursor is in Slack, the text goes there.
Can I dictate into any app?
Yes. SpeakUp types text using the system clipboard and paste mechanism, which works in virtually every macOS application. This includes browsers, email clients, word processors, code editors, messaging apps, and terminal windows.
What if SpeakUp does not type the text?
Make sure you have granted Accessibility permission. Go to System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Accessibility, and make sure SpeakUp is toggled on. Without this permission, SpeakUp cannot type into other apps.
Does SpeakUp modify or enhance my text with AI?
No. SpeakUp follows an “invisible dictation” philosophy. It transcribes exactly what you say with proper punctuation and capitalization, but it never rewrites, summarizes, corrects grammar, or enhances your text. What you say is what you get.
